Dr. Nadine George-Grave, author of such books as “The Royalty of Negro Vaudeville: The Whitman Sisters” and “The Negotiation of Race, Gender, and Class in African American Theater,” has developed a reputation as a bit of a provocateur. No better example of this exist than a speech she delivered in 2010 wherein she discussed the impact of the minstrel show on American culture. Dr. George-Graves is a Professor of Theatre and Dance at the University of California-San Diego.
The speech, Performance is Not Benign, given by Dr. George-Graves at a University Sponsored Teach-in, is excerpted and edited for clarity.
